I have a large Joomla site rapidly approaching launch-readiness, and I have a lot to do on it this weekend – finalizing the CSS styles, checking through about 70 pages of content to make sure nothing stands out as being wonky, and creating a few forms.
Then I’ll need to do some styling of the SOBI2 component, which I’ve done before, and is thankfully quite easy.
And then, some final testing and tweaking of SOBI2 and making a list for my subs of little things I see along the way. We’re getting close.
I’m at the point in my personal Joomla project where every time I go in there, I wind up with more questions than when I started that work session. Or I might go in thinking I’m going to quickly style this feature or add a module to that page, and wind up not only not figuring it out but having to go post on the forums to try to get some help. It’s coming together so well, yet I feel like I’m hiking in sand whenever I try to make a little more progress.
I have one project website that’s for me, not for any client. It’s coming along quite well and I’m now at the final CSS tweaking stages before turning it over to some volunteer testers.
A few outstanding questions I’m trying to answer, both Joomla-specific and for the site in general:
- The big question: how do I apply a module position (in this case a template’s header image module) to non-menu pages? That is, I have a module that’s showing fine in regular article pages but not for the registration page or SOBI2 search page. How do I apply one header image module to the entire site, then selectively apply other header image modules only to certain pages? The menu assignment list in the module itself is not cutting it.
- How to turn off the Joomla login module once a user is logged in. I found several tutorials on this and understand how to create a new module position in the .xml file, then edit the template’s index.php file to add a bit of code to hide that position, but when I tried it it didn’t work. Looking for another method.
- What should I show in the sidebars on the subpages? What’s valuable?
- Should I show the same newsfeeds in the footer on all pages, or vary the footer content?
I’m hoping to get this project finished in the next few weeks and launched – looking forward to seeing how it’s received.
Today marks the fourth anniversary for my web design/development company Red Kite Creative. How’s it going? It’s busy. Really busy.
I do know how to do all those things – but I’d like to be better at Drupal, PHP and frameworks and when I don’t have the time to learn something, I like to have people I trust that can do that work for me. Everything I deliver to a client has to be top quality, so it’s important that my colleagues are as picky as I am.
