I discovered this WWII-era poster via a blog post a few months ago and have since bought one for myself and one for my SEO partner. Here’s the story behind these posters. You can buy them in many places online now, in poster, card, t-shirt or other formats.

I think these are really important for creating top-of-mind awareness for your business; I usually get like a 35% open rate, which apparently is really good, and often get a few calls or emails from clients about new work each time one goes out.

This morning I’m up early so I’m working on the December issue of Fresh Web Ideas, my monthly email newsletter. Here’s the last issue.

I’m going to be moving from PHPList because it’s such a pain; trying out the new Campaign Monitor this time and if it works nicely I’ll be offering the email service to my clients.

Today is Blog Action Day (October 15, 2008) and I’m going to finally start something I’d been planning to do for awhile. Blog Action Day is an annual nonprofit event that aims to unite the world’s bloggers, podcasters and videocasters, to post about the same issue on the same day. The goal is to raise awareness and trigger a global discussion and the issue for 2008 is poverty.

Kiva is an organization that arranges for microlenders (like you and me) to provide loans for small business owners throughout the world with the goal of reducing poverty. The payback rate is extremely high, and in the event of a default, which rarely happens, your loan is treated as a donation.

I like Kiva because it’s not like writing a blank check to an enormous charitable organization; I’m directly helping a real person or small group of people take responsibility for improving their own lives and increase their economic independence. I’m banding together with dozens of other like-minded people who also want to help the same individual or small group get ahead. You can choose any from among hundreds of loan opportunities; the number is low right now due to the good influence of Blog Action Day.

Red Kite, my web design and development company, pledges to loan to a Kiva project for each new contract that comes in.

Biker gangs

scooter viewsI found out yesterday there’s a scooter club in Fort Collins with over 50 members.  I joined yesterday and am going on one of their 2x-per-month club rides tomorrow. So now I’m officially in a biker gang.

I am a Killer Bee.

Ah, clients.

Clients. You can’t live with ‘em, you can’t kill ‘em, as one of my esteemed design colleagues is fond of saying.

My SEO partner called me a while ago and told me she got an email this morning from a company whose website launched 10 months ago (and is doing very nicely in Google search results).

The company has a brand new business manager. She introduced herself in the email and explained that she wasn’t there when the site was designed, and now that she’s looked it over she doesn’t like it at all. They want a refund.
